Silicon Valley, California

Podium Silicon Valley (PodiumSV), in partnership with Nordic Innovation House and Smash, announce the launch of the first ever sports technology contest in the Nordic region, SportsTech World Cup - Nordic Edition. The contest will be kicked off and open applications online on July 31, followed by a live pitch for selected startups at the Smash Event, a side event to Slush, in Helsinki on November 29th with a grand finale in the Silicon Valley in March 2018.

SportsTech World Cup (STWC) is a global initiative to discover most innovative sports technology startups with groundbreaking projects.
The contest targets the top sports technology startups from the Nordic region: Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. Once the application phase opens this summer, startups will submit projects under one of the five selected tracks: wearable technology and smart clothing, virtual reality and augmented reality, sports analytics and artificial intelligence, fan experience, and eSports.

Selected startups will have an opportunity to pitch on stage in Helsinki during the Smash summit and the track winners will be invited to the Silicon Valley to showcase their innovations at an exclusive event organized by Podium Silicon Valley and Nordic Innovation House.

“Initiatives such as the SportsTech World Cup are essential to build the global sports technology community, identify global innovations and foster collaborations in the sports technology and innovation industry”, says Mounir Zok - Executive Advisor to Podium Silicon Valley.

Zok continues “STWC was born out of a very simple idea that was generated over dinner in the Silicon Valley: let’s put the best sports technology startups on an international podium and connect them to some of the leading brands in the world.”

“Our mission at Nordic Innovation House is to support technology startup companies from the Nordics. This Nordic Edition of SportsTech World Cup provides a huge opportunity for our high quality SportsTech companies to get connected with the American sports ecosystem. At the same time, it also enables us to increase the visibility of Nordic sports technology here in the U.S.”, says Nordic Innovation House Board Member Hartti Suomela. “We are extremely happy to join forces with Podium Silicon Valley and Smash to bring this exciting new opportunity in front of all Nordic SportsTech start-ups.”

"We at Smash believe that sport is the world's greatest source of passion and enthusiasm. Passion also unites start-up communities. We want to provide a platform where these passions, skills and business-sense can meet," Smash CEO Tommi Kolehmainen says. "SportsTech World Cup will be a great booster and open new opportunities for start-ups and the whole sports community - it is exactly what we are aiming for at Smash!" he adds.
